Obama

Published by Mark at 12:38 pm

If there’s one thing that scares me more than the (improbable) prospect of Hillary Clinton in the Ovary Office, it’s Obama there instead. A recent article linked to by Drudge highlights exactly why I grimace at the thought of his presidential run. Obama has a 95 percent liberal rating from Americans for Democratic Reform, a [...]

Kierkegaard on Marriage

Published by Mark at 3:40 pm

After reading Kierkegaard for roughly the last 15 weeks of classes, I am finding more and more that I really like his position on love and marriage. Well, technically I like Judge William’s, but I doubt that is far off from Kierkegaard’s. In particular, I admire his metaphysical conception of love and its relation to [...]

Philosophy Humor

Published by Mark at 6:53 pm

[Update: Here is the link for the video; it was bogging my site down.] Jean-Paul Sartre is sitting at a French cafe, revising his draft of Being and Nothingness. He says to the waitress, “I’d like a cup of coffee, please, with no cream.” The waitress replies, “I’m sorry, monsieur, but we’re out of cream. [...]

Where to begin…

Published by Mark at 5:51 pm

A friend of mine from ISI emailed me this article. As he said in the email, “This article perfectly sums up the inanity and insanity of American national politics. It’s also quite hilarious in its own right.”

Plato and Christ

Published by Mark at 4:56 pm

Diotima from Plato’s Symposium: The love of the gods belongs to anyone who has given birth to true virtue and nourished it, and if any human being could become immortal, it would be he. John 3:16: For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only begotten Son, so that whosoever shall [...]

Plato Quote of the Day

Published by Mark at 4:14 pm

Given the classes I’m taking this quarter, there are going to be a lot of good excerpts. So consider this the first of many to come. From Plato’s Symposium, said by Diotima: I believe that anyone will do anything for the sake of immortal virtue and the glorious fame that follows; and the better the [...]
