Fred Thompson?

Published by Mark at 2:08 pm

Given the choice of McCain, Guiliani, or Romney, I had whole-heartedly embraced Mitt Romney. I still think he would be a good candidate. But now I’m hearing more and more rumorings about Fred Thompson. To be honest, I don’t know much about him, but the more I hear, the more my interest get piqued.

Burke on Natural Aristocracy

Published by Mark at 12:28 pm

A marvelous passage from Edmund Burke’s Letter from the New to the Old Whigs (1791): A true natural aristocracy is not a separate interest in the state, or separable from it. It is an essential integrant part of any large body rightly constituted. It is formed out of a class of legitimate presumptions, which, taken [...]

Barefoot and Pregnant

No, I don’t go that far. I’m not Catholic, remember? But I do want to take a moment to reflect on the several problems in a recent NYT piece: Off to Work She Should Go. To start, the article is just terrible; it is poorly written and boring to read. Maybe this author should leave [...]

The Olympics, Economics, and World Peace

Published by Mark at 10:38 am

Easter

Published by Mark at 5:21 pm

Every Easter I’m reminded of how much I disdain the commercialization of Easter. More so than that of Christmas. Not to justify it, but at least during Christmas even the secularized version of Christmas endorses giving, reconciliation, and the bringing together of peoples and families. Easter, however, doesn’t have the same effect. The most sacred [...]

Misuse of Terminology

Published by Mark at 11:04 am

On CNN.com this morning there is a video of a military recruiter telling someone to do a “gay voodoo jig.” CNN has labeled the video “Homophobic Recruiter.” Now, I don’t support the recruiter’s actions, but let me ask you something. What does “homophobic” mean? It means fear of homosexuals or homosexuality. There is a difference, [...]
