A random thought on liberty

Published by Mark at 7:59 am

Sometimes ordinary artifacts of daily life jog a philosophical memory of mine, spurring me to create short maxims: When a society’s members are no longer bred to make wise choices, Liberty loses its Beauty and becomes little more than glorified and stubborn principle.

The Division of the 60′s

Published by Mark at 4:01 pm

There’s a great quote in The Economist from a VP at the Cato Institute (obligatory shudder) about the effects of American affluence post-World War II: The counter-cultural left combined genuine liberation with dangerous excess, while the traditionalist right mixed reaction with a desire to preserve some precious institutions, such as marriage. The left attacked capitalism [...]

Pentecost, Spirit, and Tradition

Published by Mark at 11:25 am

Rod Dreher has a good article on tradition in religious faith in the Dallas Morning News today. I met Rod at the ISI National Leadership Conference this past April in Indianapolis; a couple friends and I shared a table with him, George Nash, and Annette Kirk during the lectures. Rod is the progenitor of what [...]

Heritage Foundation on the Immigration Bill

Published by Mark at 3:02 pm

If you care at all about the immigration issue – nay, if you care at all about the rule of law, go read the Heritage Foundation’s assessment of the recent “compromise” immigration bill. Simply appalling.

Immigration Failure

Published by Mark at 2:13 pm

It’s fine; citizenship is nothing sacred, laws are words and paper. If you slap us in the face long enough, eventually we’ll turn the other cheek [...]

Mother’s Day

Published by Mark at 12:43 pm

I spent Mother’s Day at home in the ‘burbs for dinner with my family. The Maroon has an article on the Monsters of the Midway bike race that took place the same day, at which apparently two UofC prof’s were to continue their on-going duel le physique (don’t make fun of my French, I just [...]

John Edwards

Published by Mark at 9:21 am

I told a friend recently that I wanted John Edwards to win the Democratic Primary because it would be hilarious to watch him get beat up in the general election. He made a good point, however, that it wasn’t worth the risk – however infinitesimally small – of him actually winning. After reading this morning [...]
