A Definition of Civilization

Published by Mark at 11:08 pm

Civilization: A society possessing a relatively universal understanding of what it is and is not proper to do, such that freer government is possible. That is to say, the more civilized a society, the less its need for externally imposed order.

More on the CNN Debate Plants

Published by Mark at 11:34 am

As I expected, the net exploded with coverage – almost immediately – of the plants in the CNN/YouTube GOP presidential debate. It turns out Keith Kerr, the gay general, wasn’t the only one. Michelle Malkin notes: Abortion questioner is declared Edwards supporter (and a slobbering Anderson Cooper fan); Log Cabin Republican questioner is declared Obama [...]

Republican Presidential Debate – 11/28

Published by Mark at 11:29 pm

I just finished watching (what I caught of) tonight’s Republican presidential debate and thought I’d post up my thoughts while they’re still fresh. But first, let me just say for the record I think the whole YouTube question thing is a joke. Now, my impressions: Mike Huckabee ran away with the show; A+ performance. As [...]

Experience vs. Authenticity

Published by Mark at 1:44 pm

While the Republican presidential candidates continue scrambling to prove their conservative bona fides, an amusing scuffle is developing on the Democratic side. From ABC: Last week, Clinton — apparently feeling the heat — took one of her sharpest jabs yet at Obama, mocking his claim that his childhood years in Indonesia provide him with unique [...]

Paleocon Problems, Liberal Solutions

Published by Mark at 10:19 am

From what I read in Drudge’s sneak peak of his new book, Pat Buchanan has the right diagnosis but the wrong prescriptions. (full text after the break, in case the link is taken down in the future) EDIT: Yes, I realize this begs the question of what the right prescriptions are. Instead of spelling it [...]

It’s the soul, stupid

Published by Mark at 1:08 pm

There’s a depressing, though in a way amusing, piece in this week’s Time called, “Sunday School for Atheists.” No, that’s not a typo. The gist of the piece is pretty well summed up in this passage: But some nonbelievers are beginning to think they might need something for their children. “When you have kids,” says [...]

Does “relating” compromise theology?

Published by Mark at 12:52 am

This is a post I’ve had sitting in the ‘Drafts’ pile since August, when I read this post on Crunchy Con. I suppose it’s also related to that video from City Church in Chicago, the one about the preacher’s hot wife (alas, they’ve taken the video down so there’s no link – it was quite [...]

“A fragment on Conservatism and Progress”

Published by Mark at 3:59 pm

Great post up over at WWwtW on conservatism and progress in the 20th century. Highlight: These collectivist movements were not trivial, they were hardly fleeting, and they were extraordinarily popular, not least with that class of people whose business is the public intellect. In truth they were wicked, and they were sanguinary in the extreme; [...]
